Football FAQ
UTSA will play its first football game in September 2011.
UTSA is planning to play home football games in the Alamodome.
The plan calls for UTSA to begin play at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS/formerly Division I-AA) level with the intent to advance football and the athletics department’s existing 16 intercollegiate programs to an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS/formerly Division I-A) conference. FBS-level schools include Texas, Texas Tech, UTEP and Houston. Other FCS-level schools include Southland Conference members such as Texas State, Sam Houston St. and Stephen F. Austin. UTSA will play an independent football schedule (not affiliated with any conference) in the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Eventually the team will practice at the planned athletic complex on the UTSA Park West campus. In the interim, the team will practice at the Dub Farris Athletic Complex.

UTSA already sponsors a pep band and spirit program, which consists of a cheerleading squad and dance team. With the addition of football, we hope to expand these programs but it will involve additional fundraising.
We are planning on having specific season ticket packages on sale around July 2010. However you can reserve your season ticket right now by putting a deposit down. We are accepting $50 deposits per seat right now to reserve season tickets in the Alamodome. The deposits are non-refundable and will be applied to the cost of your season tickets in 2011. You can make a deposit online by clicking here.
Season tickets will be $120. Single game tickets will be priced higher than the cost per game of season tickets, but there will be some special rates for groups.
Donors will choose seat locations in order of their Loyalty Points which are given through the Roadrunner Athletic Fund. Current donors to the Roadrunner Athletic Fund will always have priority for seat selection. Therefore, it is important to review the Loyalty Points information and know how you earn Points. Appointment times will be set for May and June 2011 in order of Loyalty Points for donors to choose their seats. People that paid a deposit on season tickets prior to July 2010 but are not donors will pick next and those that are not donors and did not pay a deposit will pick last.
The Loyalty Points system rewards supporters of UTSA Athletics by recognizing both annual giving and season ticket purchases. The Loyalty Points system will allow the Roadrunner Athletic Fund to fairly distribute valued items such as premier seating locations for season tickets in football and basketball, as well as ticket availability for special events such as NCAA Tournaments (including possible future Final Fours), tickets for away games, and any other event where ticket demand exceeds availability.
You earn Loyalty Points by donating to the Roadrunner Athletic Fund and purchasing UTSA Athletics season tickets. Visit the Loyalty Points page on our web site for a detailed explanation of how many points you will earn for different activities.
The Athletics Department does not receive any state aid nor tuition money. The Athletics Department budget is funded by student fees, donations, and sponsorship/ticket sales. Annual donations to the Roadrunner Athletic Fund help pay for scholarships, recruitment of student athletes, recruitment and retention of the highest quality staff and coaches, academic support, team travel, and other operating expenses.
In most cases, donations to the Roadrunner Athletic Fund are 80% tax deductible. This means that you may deduct 80% of your donation amount on your taxes.
Of course, just click here to donate to the Roadrunner Athletic Fund and start earning Loyalty Points.
The Roadrunner Athletic Fund will calculate Loyalty Points for all donors in July 2010 and again prior to seat selection in 2011. Everyone will be able to know their Loyalty Points by the time football season tickets go on sale.
No, there will be season tickets available that do not require a donation. However donors will pick their seats first and there will be some seating sections that require a donation. Fans that are not donors will pick seats in the order that their season tickets were purchased. Fans that put a deposit down on season tickets before July 2010 will pick before anyone that did not do a deposit.
Ties will be broken first by your current year Roadrunner Athletic Fund donation, second on your consecutive years of giving to the Athletic Fund, and third on your cumulative lifetime donations to the Athletic Fund.
You will be able to keep the same seats from year to year provided you renew your season tickets before the deadline and you maintain the necessary minimum level of annual giving for your seating section. Although we do not plan on making any changes to the donation levels in the near-term, if the required donation levels increase in the future you would have to continue to meet the minimum requirements in order to maintain your seat location.
Students enrolled at UTSA in the Fall of 2011 will get in free to all UTSA home athletic events, including football games, as long as they have a valid student ID. Students will be informed of the process for obtaining their tickets to football games prior to the season starting.
UTSA Faculty & Staff members will probably be offered a special price on season tickets. However, they will be choosing their seats just like everyone else, meaning in order of how many Loyalty Points they have earned through the Roadrunner Athletic Fund. Certain seating sections will still have the same minimum annual donation requirements. So they will receive a special rate on season tickets, but will be choosing their seat location according to the same rules as all other UTSA fans and supporters.
UTSA has long been a university of first choice and provides access to excellence for more than 29,600 graduate and undergraduate students. Football will not change this. UTSA is still on target to become a national research university. That means an increase in the number of academic programs, more contributions to the economic success of San Antonio and the region and an enhanced student life. We are simply adding a championship-driven Division I football program to the list.
